Your 10-step RECA licensing process
Here's an honest, 10-step guide with pro-tips on how to become a real estate agent in Alberta.
STEP 1
Check your eligibility
Ensure you meet RECA's basic requirements:
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Be able to provide an accepted form of valid government-issued identification
- Have a Canadian high school diploma or equivalent
- Be able to study and work in Canada

STEP 2
Create your myRECA account
myRECA is your portal with the regulator. You'll create your account, then submit your eligibility application: pay the $350 non-refundable eligibility fee, upload your ID and photo, and have your transcript and proof of English proficiency sent to RECA directly.
Here's the part people miss: your eligibility must be approved before you can enrol in pre-licensing education. Approval is also when you receive your RECA Contact ID — the number you'll need to register for your courses.

STEP 3
Enrol with Relo
Register for one of our RECA-recognized courses. Have your RECA Contact ID ready when you sign up.

STEP 4
Master your pre-licensing education on ReadyEngine™
Once enrolled, ReadyEngine™ assesses your starting point across every concept on the RECA exam blueprint. Every session updates your ReadyRating™ in real time.
To complete each course, reach ReadyRating™ Level 4, watch all video lessons, and pass two practice exams. Reach Level 5 and your course is backed by the Pass Guarantee.

STEP 5
Start your brokerage search
Begin networking and interviewing with brokerages while you study. Your license must be held by an authorized real estate brokerage in Alberta.
STEP 6
Complete your criminal record check
After you finish your Practice of Residential course, complete your criminal record check (CRC). RECA recommends waiting until now because your CRC must be less than six months old when you apply for your licence.
It's quick: log in to myRECA, start a CRC application, and complete it online through Mintz Global. The fee is about $50, and RECA usually receives your results within about two business days.

STEP 7
Pass your two RECA exams
There's one pre-licensing exam for each course. You'll write the Fundamentals of Real Estate exam after you finish Fundamentals, then the Practice of Residential Real Estate exam after you finish Practice of Residential. Each time, your course provider marks you "Ready for Exam" in myRECA, and then you book and pay through your myRECA account.
- Two exams: Fundamentals of Real Estate (120 questions) and Practice of Residential Real Estate (100 questions)
- Pass mark: 70% on each
- Attempts: two per exam, both within three months of your course completion date
- Fee: $235 per attempt
- Where: in person at a Pearson test centre (no online exam option as of July 1, 2026)

STEP 8
Secure your brokerage
Your chosen brokerage will give you the necessary employment and sponsorship documentation for RECA.
STEP 9
Apply for your license
With your education complete, exam passed, background check cleared, and brokerage onboarded, complete the final licensing application to RECA. The license and registration fee is $800: $475 license fee, $225 errors-and-omissions insurance, and $100 Assurance Fund.
STEP 10
Get activated
Once RECA approves your application, your licence is activated. You're now ready to practise residential real estate in Alberta. Congratulations!
